Redispersible Polymer Powder(Polymer Powder)/RDP/VAE
RDP (Redispersible Polymer Powder) or VAE Powder (Vinyl Acetate Ethylene Copolymer) is a water-soluble re-dispersible powder. It is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. It dissolves in water easily and forms emulsion quickly, RDP could offer strong adhesive and stretching force to improve the workability, flexibility and  water-proofing of the materials. Redispersible Polymer Powder is a kind of free-flowing white powder,which is spray-dryed by polymer emulsion and after subsequent treatment to keep the stability of powder appearance and character. The mainly application is in construction dry-mixed mortar,and have excellent performance in increasing the dry mortar cohesion,adhesion and flexibility.
The Rdp/redispersible polymer powder(VAE) is a water-soluble re-dispersible powder. It is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. It uses polyvinyl alcohol as a protective colloid. By adding re-dispersible latex powder, the performance of mortar with cement or gypsum as the substrate can meet the needs of various constructions.

The mechanism of the RDP/Redispersible Polymer Powder(redispersible emulsion powder) to improve the workability of the newly mixed mortar is: the emulsion powder, especially to protect the colloid dispersion of water and increase the viscosity of the slurry, improve the cohesion of the construction mortar.
After the newly mixed mortar containing emulsion powder dispersion is formed, with the water absorption of the base surface, the consumption of hydration reaction, and the volatilization to the air, the water is gradually reduced, the resin particles are gradually close, the interface is gradually blurred, the resin is gradually fused with each other, and finally polymerized into a film. The process of polymer film formation is divided into three stages. In the first stage, the polymer particles move freely in the form of Brownian motion in the initial emulsion. As water evaporates, the movement of particles is naturally more and more restricted, and the interfacial tension between water and air causes them to gradually line up together. In the second stage, when the particles begin to contact each other, the water in the network evaporates through the capillary tubes, and the high capillary tension applied to the surface of the particles causes the deformation of the latex spheres so that they fuse together, the remaining water fills the pores, and the film is roughly formed. The third and final stage enables the diffusion of polymer molecules (sometimes called self-adhesive) to form a truly continuous membrane. In the film forming process, the isolated movable latex particles consolidate into a new film phase, which has a high tensile stress. Obviously, in order for the RDP/Redispersible Polymer Powder(redispersible emulsion powder) to re-harden the film in the sand slurry, the minimum film forming temperature (MFT) must be ensured to be lower than the curing temperature of the mortar.

Applications and dosage
HEARST-503M is recommended to use in dry mixing mortar or powder construction material products, such as ceramic tile adhesive, tile grout, external wall insulation system (EIFS/ETICS), extrusion mortar for EPS component, waterproofing mortar, self-leveling mortar, repair mortar, decorative mortar, skim coat, fire-resistant mortar, sound insulation mortar, Joint compound, AAC adhesive, gypsum products, etc.
Normally recommended dosage is 0.5~5% in total formulation.

The addition of RDP/Redispersible Polymer Powder(redispersible latex powder) to mortar can significantly improve the bond strength with other materials, because the hydrophilic latex powder and the liquid phase of the cement suspension permeate into the pores and capillaries of the matrix, and the latex powder forms a film in the pores and capillaries and is firmly adsorbed on the surface of the matrix, thus ensuring a good bond strength between the cementing material and the matrix.
The optimization of latex powder on mortar performance is due to the fact that latex powder is a high polymer with polar groups. When latex powder is mixed with EPS particles, the non-polar chain segment of latex powder polymerization main chain will physically adsorb the non-polar surface of EPS. The polar groups in the polymer are oriented outward on the surface of EPS particles, making EPS particles change from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. Due to the modification effect of latex powder on the surface of EPS particles, the problem that EPS particles are easy to float when exposed to water and the stratification degree of mortar is large is solved. At this time, cement is added to mix, and the polar groups adsorbed on the surface of EPS particles interact with the cement particles and are closely combined, so that the workability of EPS insulation mortar is significantly improved. This is reflected in the EPS particles are easily wetted by cement slurry, and the binding force between the two is greatly improved.
